ND Students Present Scientific Research at the Delaware County Science Fair

Notre Dame scientists recently took part in the Delaware County Science Fair. The Fair consisted of 114 students presenting their scientific research in a variety of categories. Ten of the Academy’s students participated in the fair this year with seven of those students winning awards.

In the Middle School, the following students took placement awards:

7th grade

Alexandra McCulloch - Second Place, Botany

Gillian Spragg - First Place, Zoology

Therese Trainer - Second Place, Consumer Sciences

8th Grade

Charlotte Lignowski - Second Place, Environmental Sciences

Emma McGuinn - First Place, Environmental Sciences

In the High School, the following students took placement awards:

10th Grade

Cecilia Quirk - First Place, Engineering

11th Grade

Anna Dewey - First Place, Environmental Science

Additionally, three students received special and prestigious monetary awards.

Anna Dewey - The Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers recognized Anna for her development of a filtration polymer that utilized coffee grounds to remove heavy metal ions from water. This award includes an invitation and dinner at the headquarters where Anna will present her research and be recognized for her award.

Emma McGuinn - The Delaware County Science Teachers Association recognized Emma for her work on how acid rain affected the germination of plants.

Gillian Spragg - The Delaware County Institute of the Sciences recognized Gillian for her work on the toxicity of caffeine. This award includes an invitation to the headquarters of the society where Gillian will present her research, be recognized for her award and hear the society's research on deep aquatic activity in the Atlantic Ocean along the Mid Atlantic Ridge.
