President Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D., announced on Friday, January 27, 2017 the selection of Sister Nancy Bonshock, SND, as commencement speaker for the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur's senior class graduation. The graduation ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 on the grounds of the Academy's Mansion.
Sister Nancy Bonshock's history with the Notre Dame community spans more than 50 years. At the age of 19, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur's novitiate program. From there, she received a Bachelor's degree from Trinity University in Washington D.C. and taught for five years at Little Flower High School in Philadelphia. She spent two years working on a Navajo reservation in Arizona and received her Master's degree in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania before joining the faculty at Notre Dame.
For four decades, Sister Nancy taught, guided, and inspired Notre Dame students as a member of our Social Studies department, and upon her retirement from the Academy in 2016, embarked upon a new career challenge.
Sister Nancy now provides pastoral care and emotional and spiritual support for patients at Thomas Jefferson University through the hospital's Clinical Education for Pastoral Care program.
In her announcement to the Notre Dame community Dr. Dwyer said, "Sister Nancy's life of compassionate service to others is a shining example of the legacy of Saint Julie Billiart and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur."
