Summer Session 2018

The Academy of Notre Dame is pleased to offer the following programs for current ND high school students for course credit, mathematics preparation, or development of leadership skills for middle school students. To select a class click on the button below each description. Please complete the online form at the bottom of this page with payment by May 1, 2018.

PHOTOGRAPHY Course 6092, credit 0.5
Grades 10, 11, and 12
June 11-29, 9:00 am - noon

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of digital and traditional film photography. The course covers camera settings and functions, exposure, lighting, film processing, darkroom printing, digital file management and digital photo editing using Adobe Photoshop. Basic photographic history and composing creative photographs using the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design will be covered. All equipment and supplies including digital and traditional film cameras will be provided. Students will produce a printed and a digital portfolio of their work. This course requires in-class and out-of-class shooting time and camera check-out is available and encouraged. Successful completion of this course fulfills an Academy of Notre Dame .5 arts elective or a .5 technology elective.

This accelerated course is designed to teach students basic First Aid and CPR techniques in order to prepare them to properly handle medical emergencies. This class will present knowledge related to understanding, recognizing and treating a variety of common injuries. Students will learn how to perform CPR and understand how to recognize emergencies that require advanced life support. Students will also be introduced to the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems, including how the heart functions and the role of bones and muscles in the body. This course will be hands-on and will include practical application of knowledge through First Aid and CPR demonstrations. Successful completion of this course fulfills the Academy of Notre Dame Grade 10 Health requirement. CPR Certification is provided by the American Red Cross.

LEADERSHIP (non-credit course)

Leadership training is an essential skill area for productive citizens in today's global society. Participants in the middle school Leadership Camp will explore goal setting, teamwork, community building and problem solving. Rooted in the example of Saint Julie Billiart, the reflection-action-reflection process will engage participants in developing their decision-making, critical thinking, conflict resolution and public speaking skills. Guided by Notre Dame's Hallmarks, Leadership Camp seeks to empower girls to become honorable, compassionate leaders. 

MATH AND PHYSICS READINESS (Blended learning in class and online)

This program is designed to prepare rising freshmen students for the rigor and concepts presented in Algebra I and freshman year Physics. In order to ensure success during both subjects, a firm understanding of certain concepts and ways of thinking are absolute necessities. Unlike other summer programs, a high percentage of this course occurs online. This allows for students to learn and review the topics at their own pace, while also providing a bank of resources for students to use during their tenure at Notre Dame. The following topics will be discussed during the course:
  • Operations of real numbers, including order of operations involving integers and rational numbers
  • Conversion between fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Determining percent increase/decrease based on various situations
  • Exponential rules and simplifying expressions using exponent rules
  • Solving proportions from a geometric and algebraic viewpoint
  • Graphing ordered pairs within the coordinate plane
  • Simplifying expressions using the distributive property and combining like terms
  • Solving single and multi-step equations and inequalities
  • Determining factors of values, including greatest common factor and least common multiple
  • Unit conversion and using metric unit measurements
  • Representing various numbers in scientific notation
