Sample Bequest Language & Helpful Tips

A bequest—a gift in your will—is a simple and convenient way to create a legacy. Because a will is an important legal document, you should seek an attorney’s advice in executing one.  Before the meeting, review the charitable options below.  Be sure to explain your interest in leaving a charitable bequest early in the conversation.

Unrestricted bequests give Notre Dame the most flexibility, allowing the funds to be allocated wherever the need is greatest.

Restricted bequests allow you to designate your support for a special program or purpose that reflects your interests.  Should you choose this option, we encourage you and/or your attorney to discuss your intentions with the Advancement Office at the Academy to ensure that your wishes can be carried out.

Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate.  The following examples include the Academy’s legal identification.

Percentage of estate for unrestricted purposes
“I give to the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (Federal Tax ID #23-1465491) located in Villanova, Pennsylvania, ________ percent of my residuary estate for its general purposes.”

Specific amount or asset for unrestricted purposes
“I give to the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur (Federal Tax ID #23-1465491) located in Villanova, Pennsylvania, the sum of ____________ dollars in cash or __________ shares of _____________ stock to be used for its general purposes.”

Please contact the Advancement Office at Notre Dame to discuss suggested bequest wording for restricted purposes to ensure that your wishes can and will be followed.
