Six Notre Dame students traveled to San Antonio, Texas to gather with over eight thousand students and teachers from various Independent Schools around the globe as part of the annual NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference and the People of Color Conference.
Junior Ava Barrera described the experience as one of the most emotionally vulnerable and draining experiences she has been part of in her life.
"This experience means the world to me. To have shared a room with leaders who have conquered so many hardships in their lives and to feel those intense feelings alongside them, was life-changing, I wouldn't trade it for the world," said Barrera.
Barrera said the conference brought so much joy but also sadness. Seeing what others have gone through not only at school but in life was, "heartbreaking."
It, "physically hurt", Barrera to see the pain from others that week, but the fact that they were all there together to love and support one another is what got her through.
"You felt like you had just climbed a mountain and could literally do everything you could possibly put your mind to," said Barrera.
