In a letter to the Notre Dame community, Head of School Dr. Judith Dwyer shared, "I am pleased to announce that Mondira Kundu, M.D., Ph.D. ’89, pathologist and full member at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, has accepted our invitation to give the Academy’s Commencement Address on June 5, 2021.
"Dr. Kundu received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Pennsylvania State University and her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Jefferson Medical College as part of the 6-year accelerated B.S./M.D. and Gibbons Scholar M.D./Ph.D. program. Dr. Kundu was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health, prior to completing clinical training in Clinical Pathology/Hematopathology and additional research training at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kundu has received several prestigious awards, including the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Fellowship Award, Burroughs Wellcome Career Award in Biomedical Sciences, American Society of Hematology Junior Faculty Scholar Award, as well as multiple grant awards from the National Institutes of Health. She is also an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigations.
"In a recent Visions article, Dr. Kundu shared that her 'journey in the
sciences began while at Notre Dame, thanks to the wonderful teachers and
small class sizes, both of which encouraged me to think freely and ask
questions. I somehow knew I wanted to be a doctor at a young age, but it
was at Notre Dame that my interest in science blossomed. It was at Notre
Dame that I decided I wanted to pursue a M.D. and a Ph.D.'
"We look forward to welcoming Dr. Mondira Kundu home to Notre Dame to
celebrate the graduating Class of 2021."
