Class of 2026 Commencement Speaker

Class of 2026 Commencement Speaker
Abigail Merola

We are excited to announce that Martie Gillin Bernicker, Class of 1985, will be our Commencement Speaker. A devoted alumna and widely respected advocate for youth well-being, Martie’s life and work beautifully reflect the mission and values instilled at the Academy of Notre Dame.

Mrs. Martie Bernicker is the Executive Director of SpeakUp!, a nonprofit organization founded by her mother, Mrs. Martie Gillin, to foster open, honest conversations between young people and the adults who care for them. What began as one brave family has grown into a powerful, research-informed organization supporting students, parents, and educators as they navigate the complex challenges of adolescence. Under Martie’s leadership, SpeakUp! has reached tens of thousands of individuals, helping young people feel seen, heard, and less alone.

As SpeakUp! celebrates 25 years, Martie is using this milestone to drive growth and elevate the organization’s mission. Guided by her belief that “young people are incredible, but it is not easy to be a young person right now,” Martie has dedicated her career to building stronger connections, empathy, and resilience within communities. Reflecting on her time at Notre Dame, Martie credits the Academy with teaching her far more than academics. Inspired by Saint Julie Billiart’s call to “teach them what they need to know for life,” she carries forward the values of faith, integrity, compassion, and purpose in all that she does.

We are honored to welcome Martie Gillin Bernicker ’85 back to campus to share her wisdom and encouragement with the Class of 2026 as they prepare to step beyond the Gates of Notre Dame.
