Social Service Program
The social service program of the Academy of
Notre Dame flows directly from the mission of the school which urges each individual “to promote
God’s glory…through an enduring commitment to social justice and the needs of the
poor.”
Criteria for Social Service
Service at Notre Dame is offered in the spirit of St. Julie and guided by the gospel of Jesus.
It therefore requires that our outreach projects be: one-on-one, non-philanthropic, [not fund-raising]
and direct to those in need.
Typical service opportunities include religious institutions (including churches and activities like CCD or Sunday babysitting, schools, soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries or other non liturgical parish service activities) and a wide variety of civic agencies (hospitals, nursing homes and recreation programs). For clarification on appropriate service activities, students should consult the Campus Ministry Office.
Service Requirement
Social service is a graduation requirement. Students are expected to have completed a minimum of 40 hours, 20 of which should be relational; that is the service must have a direct connection to people. It is strongly recommended that students complete their service hours by the end of junior year, but no later than the end of the first semester of senior year. Completion of 30 service hours by the end of junior year is a requirement for those who seek to run for Five Main positions on Student Council. Click here to read more about the process required.

Painted on the wall of the Romero Center, a Retreat and Social Justice Education Center
in the heart of East Camden, NJ, are the probing and powerful words, "So you say
you love the poor...name them." For one wonder-full week in June, 13 NDA students
with their two moderators took up the challenge.
Hear their stories as they name
the poor they were privileged to companion!
By learning to BE with others whose stories are not like our own, we are invited into
a ministry of presence where God reveals amazing things… “things we need to
know for Life.” |
