Mathletes

Mathletes is an interscholastic math competition between various schools in the Archdiocese. Competitions are hosted once a month and the locations and the topics vary. All the Mathletes work very hard preparing for the competitions.

On February 24, six students from the Junior School Mathletes Club participated in the regional MATHCOUNTS ® Competition, sponsored by the National Association of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the CNA Foundation.

MATCHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching & competition program that promotes middle school mathematics. Schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in one of the more than 500 written and oral competitions held nationwide. The competition has become so popular that versions are available in Braille for vision impaired students. The top team and top four individuals from regional competition advance to the state and national level.

One hundred and twenty-four students in grades 6-8 from nineteen schools participated in the regional competition, which was comprised of an almost equal number of boys and girls. Academy of Notre Dame eighth grader Gracie Rosenbach finished in sixth place in the individual portion of the contest and received a trophy for her accomplishment. Teammates Kate Detweiler, Lucy Spellacy, Stephanie Costa, Erica Rubino and Kelly Weniger also fared well in the competition.

According to Kevin Matson, the moderator for the Delaware County chapter of MATHCOUNTS ®, this year’s contest “was a little harder than in the past.” The Delaware County chapter traditionally fares well in the state competition, which will be held from March 23-24 in Harrisburg. Winners will advance to the national competition which will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 10-13, 2007. Strath Haven Middle School will be representing the Delaware County chapter in Harrisburg.
