| ND science teacher recently incorporated a robotics unit into her physics curriculum. With software and parts designed by LEGO and Carnegie Melon, the robots are constructed and programmed by students to utilize various sensors such as light/dark, touch, ultra sonic, motion and sound. |
A World of Discovery
The Science Department of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur provides a rigorous grounding for our students in all the major scientific disciplines. At the same time, we encourage each girl to push herself and try to cultivate each student's innate curiosity.
- exceptional faculty (many have advanced degrees and all share an enthusiasm for their subjects)
- state-of-the-art laboratory facilities ( laboratories for chemistry, biology, environmental studies, and physics, as well as one dedicated to the junior school science program)
- computer labs
- smart boards in place in every science classroom.
- use of the beautiful grounds of Notre Dame an extended laboratory
Junior School Science Program
The goals of the junior school science program are three-fold are:
- To provide students with fundamental knowledge to develop an appreciation of basic science concepts
- To encourage students to relate scientific development in today's world
- To build critical thinking and problem-solving skills while using the scientific method in laboratory experiences
High School Science Program
Students in the high school are required to complete three years of science.
- Biology and Chemistry are required courses in the ninth and tenth grades.
- preparation for both science and non-science majors for their college studies
- an accelerated science program for students with outstanding science, verbal, and math skills
