Mrs. Giannantonio's Science Fair Headquarters
Science Fair Deadlines
Mrs. G’s 2009-2010 Deadlines for Science Fair:
The following is a list of tentative Deadlines for Science Fair. Changes
in scheduling may cause these deadlines to be adjusted. I will try to
update this page as needed.
- Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - Three possible topic ideas are due. Topics should be listed in the journal along with a general explanation of what each experiment might entail and why this topic interests you.
- Thursday, October 1, 2009 – Topics are due!
This dated journal entry should in clued the topic you have chosen,
a basic rationale for the project, and an idea of how you might proceed.
It need not be long. I will return it to you with suggestions
- Monday, October 5, 2009 - Preliminary bibliography is due. This dated journal entry should include 5 sources, listed in APA format (APA Citation Format or NoodleBib 6), one source must be a book, and two of the sources should be journal articles less than 5 years old. Underneath each entry, explain what type of information you expect to use from that source.
- Thursday, October 22, 2009 – Background research
paper is due! This paper, at least three typed double-spaced pages in length, should contain general
information on your topic. This should be a comprehensive paper. For example,
if you decide to investigate the effects of acid rain on duckweed,
your paper should contain information on the species, information
on the formation of acid rain, research to date in this field, and
any other information you might need to know about the topic or experimental
procedures you may employ. You should include citations and a “references” page. The APA format should be used for citations and references. You will be able to use the information from this paper as background for the introduction to your final report due in February.
- Thursday, November 5, 2009 – Preliminary
Research Plans are due for all projects. See About Journals for what should be included in this dated journal entry. They will be returned,
with suggestions, in time for you to fill out all of the necessary
paperwork. Please be sure that you have spoken to me beforehand if
you require any supplies that need to be ordered.
- Week of November 2, 2009 – Schedule a time to meet with Mrs. G. about your project.
- Tuesday, November 17, 2009 – Revised research plans are due. This should be a typed document that includes all the requested information from Research Plan Form 1A. You should be able to copy most of this information from your journal.
- Monday, November 23, 2009 – All forms and final research plan attachments
are due. Leave actual start and finish dates for experimentation blank for
now.
- Friday, December 4, 2009 – All supplies must
be ready to begin experimentation.
- Monday, December 7, 2009 – Class time for the remainder of the week will be given
for experimentation. We may need to run into the next week in order
for some students to complete their experiments. All students are
expected to use this time wisely. If you have lag time in your experiment,
or if you finish early, you should be helping someone else with their
project. I will take this time away if you are not working conscientiously.
Don’t forget that you may need to spend extra time on your project.
You may need to take your project home over Christmas break (if possible)
if it is not finished, or you may need to finish on your own time
after the break.
- December 10 - December 18, 2009 – Everyone must meet individually with Mrs. G. Bring your journal with up-to-date data.
- During the month of January – I will be happy
to help you with your data analysis and preview your paper.
- Friday, January 8, 2010 – Preliminary abstracts are due. Please hand in your abstract, single spaced, on white paper. It should be no longer than 250 words, written in third person and in past tense. Include your name at the top (the final copy will not have your name) and a word count at the bottom.
- Monday, February 1, 2010 – Papers are due at the beginning of class, no exceptions.
- Tuesday, February 16, 2010 – Backboards, journals,
and revised papers are due! Place them on top of the bookshelves in the library
by 8:30 a.m. I will grade them and return them as soon as possible
so that you can make changes before the fair. Smile! The hard part
is over!
