News Bits

  • Notre Dame students packed and transported Thanksgiving bins for families in the Gesu Parish in Philadelphia. Notre Dame students and faculty members collected over 40 baskets worth of non-perishable foods and canned goods in their homerooms as part of an annual Campus Ministry food drive.
  • Students received a special guest on October 28, 2008. Time magazine editor-at-large, Nancy Gibbs, made an unexpected visit to the Academy to speak to high school history, government and religion classes and faculty. Gibbs, a native New Yorker and 25-year Time veteran, spoke to students about the presidential candidates, the economy and its political implications, and the younger generation’s role in the election. Students were engaged and asked insightful questions as to the candidates’ families and their involvement with the campaign, as well as their religious backgrounds and the implications on the election. Students were also interested in hearing about Gibbs’ own personal experience and her professional journey at Time. Ironically, Gibbs started at Time as self described “fact checker.” In October, Gibbs authored the Time’s cover story, “Does Temperament Matter?”

  • Academy of Notre Dame juniors Maggie Schultz and Tara Vaughan recently spent the day with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. The girls got an opportunity to have an up-close look at city government; touring the facility, learning about how the press office operates and, as a special bonus, taking part in a pep rally for the World Series-bound Phillies.
  • The Cross Country team battled stormy weather and twelve other teams to bring home first place in the PA Independent Schools Cross Country State Championship at Mercersburg Academy on Saturday, October 25. Notre Dame swept its competition, scoring 29 points and outdistancing second place Germantown Friends who finished with 85 points. Finishing in the top spots for Notre Dame were freshman Maria Seykora (1st place), eighth grader Kathleen Fitzpatrick (2nd place), freshman Caroline Powers (5th place), junior Stephanie Powers (7th place), junior Maggie Schultz (15th place), junior Kerri Borgese (18th place) and senior Maura McMahon (35th place). Notre Dame's Junior Varsity team also had an exceptional finish, with freshman Bridget Hanna ending the day in first place and junior Mary Mulholland. Under the guidance of Coach Mike McMillan and Assistant Coach Laura O'Donnell, Notre Dame's varsity team finished the 2008 season undefeated, taking home the Inter-Ac title for the fourth year in a row.
